SKN Hotel

The design of this project began with an on-site exploration in Sakon Nakhon, where the team sought to understand the local context, landscape, and way of life. During this process, we discovered the unique charm of the region’s indigo dyeing culture, a significant heritage deeply rooted in the identity of the local community. The richness of this tradition, along with its craftsmanship and cultural value, became the primary inspiration for the project. The approach to this hotel design is grounded in the idea of translating local identity into architectural language. Rather than merely referencing traditional elements, the project adopts the concept of cultural architecture, where the essence of place is decoded and reinterpreted into a contemporary spatial experience. Through an in-depth study of Sakon Nakhon’s indigo dyeing process — from the preparation of natural materials and fermentation to the creation of patterns — the design captures not only the physical process but also the underlying philosophy of time, patience, and craftsmanship embedded in local life. This exploration led to the development of indigo architecture as the core concept of the project. The architecture abstracts the qualities of indigo — its depth, layering, and tonal variations — and translates them into spatial sequences, material expressions, and atmospheric conditions. Light and shadow are carefully orchestrated to evoke the subtle transitions found in indigo-dyed fabrics, while material textures are designed to reflect the tactile qualities of handcrafted surfaces. A significant element of the project is its facade design, which draws inspiration from the patterns and gradients of indigo textiles. The facade is conceived as a layered architectural skin that filters light and creates a dynamic visual rhythm, echoing the repetitive yet organic nature of traditional dyeing techniques. It functions not only as an envelope but also as a storytelling medium, expressing the cultural identi
